Texas
I have a theory about The Chimp and The War.
I grew up in Washington, District of Columbia. No, really.
Anyway in those days we had even less home rule than DC has now. Which is to say damn little. To accomplish much of anything, like clean up a river or build a road or spray for mosquitos -- little local stuff -- you had to get along with your neighbors. There were 20 or 25 jurisdictions including states, cities, counties, and incorporated towns that had to agree to get through a day.
And even though folks might have disagreed on pretty important things, they learned to get along. I might want you to agree on something today, but next week you might need my help. You stay friendly. You cooperate. Most importantly you learn skills that help you get along with your neighbors.
Dubya grew up in Texas where distance means something. Down in Crawford you have to go half a day to find another jurisdiction. If you go out on the porch and take a piss, you're pissing on your own property. If somebody gets hit by the stream it's his own fault for being where he shouldn't be.
And that's just the way he runs the country.
It's no wonder that those parochial folks in Europe where folks have to get along, where they have to cooperate to build roads and bridges and currency think he's a cretin. He thinks it's all his to piss on.
