The SCOTUS Speaks

In the simplest possible terms (pdf) the court held that the detainees may not be tried by miltary tribunals, that Article 3 of the Geneva Convention applies as a matter of treaty obligation to the conflict against Al Qaeda, and that the President is subject to limitations based on treaties and Congressional action, and international law. Marty Lederman and Glenn Greenwald have extended technical remarks. There are wildly speculating posts all over the net but I think I'll give it a few days to shake out. Folks like to spin tales far afield before returning to the ground.

I'm sure you will be surprised to hear that Messrs. Justice Scalia and Thomas not only wrote dissents but read them aloud.
