You Still Have Some Rights

If you believe that you have been denied the right to vote based on your race, color, or language minority status or that otherwise your voting rights under federal law have been violated, you may contact the Civil Rights Division of the United States Department of Justice.

Civil Rights Division attorneys in both the Voting and Criminal Sections in Washington, D.C., will be ready to receive election-related complaints of potential violations relating to any of the statutes the Civil Rights Division enforces.   Attorneys in the division will take appropriate action and will consult and coordinate with local U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and with other entities within the Department of Justice concerning these complaints before, during, and after Election Day, as appropriate.

Civil Rights Division staff will be available by phone to receive complaints related to ballot access (1-800-253-3931 toll free or 202-307-2767) or by TTY (1-877-267-8971).   In addition, individuals may also report complaints, problems, or concerns related to voting by fax to 202-307-3961, by email to voting.section@usdoj.gov and, closer to Election Day, by complaint forms that may be submitted through a link on the department’s website, at www.justice.gov/crt/about/vot/ .

 

Complaints related to violence or threats of violence at a polling place should, in the first instance, always be reported to local police authorities by calling 911. 

laws prohibit discrimination based on race or membership in a minority language group; prohibit intimidation of voters; provide that voters who need assistance in voting because of disability or illiteracy can obtain assistance from a person of their choice; require minority language election materials and assistance in certain jurisdictions; provide for accessible election machines for voters with disabilities; require provisional ballots for voters who assert they are eligible but whose names do not appear on poll books; provide for absentee ballots for service members, their family members and U.S. citizens living abroad; and require states to ensure that citizens can register at drivers’ license offices, public assistance offices , other state agencies and through the mail; and include requirements regarding maintaining voter registration lists.

I've Been Avoiding

what we're calling the "war on women" this week because once I start I won't be able to stop. (I'm currently trying to stop swearing about the legislature in Virginia that thinks freedom is requiring an internal vaginal probe.)  But while I'm trying to get calm enough to construct actual words, you really must see the panel that testified on women's reproductive health today to Mr. Issa's committee.

Everybody has a piece of advice for the protesters at Occupy Wall Street. They should put their clothes on. They should stop raising their fists. They should fact-check their handwritten signs. They should appoint leaders who can give pithy quotes to reporters. They should get with an electoral program...

If you spend an hour or two down at Liberty Plaza, as I did with my 8-year-old daughter this past weekend, it’s clear enough. She got the point, at least: especially from the signs that read, “You should teach your kids to share,” and, “Give my mom her money back!! A single working mom…not fair!

And these aren't just folks on the right. It seems as though the left is incessantly whining about the lack of perfection of the first sign of life from anybody who isn't to the right of Attila the Hun. Do they really want everything lousy so that they can snivel and cry in their beer? Are they really so afraid of the lack of order that anything short of instant perfection must be reigned in? What's up with all of the fear and trepidation? Afraid that if you say what you mean somebody won't like you?

Is this the result of an over-privileged middle class afraid of losing 385 television channels? Or a school system spun from Texas-approved text books? Or a struggle to grab what little you can from an economy that is in the toilet?

Maybe it is you, my fearful leftist friends, who are to blame for Barack Obama, you people who seem just like him, who would rather not make waves than make progress. Look in the mirror. Please.
