Autumn
is my absolutely favorite time of year. The trees are about one third changed, the maples cerise and yellow against a startling blue sky. It is briskly cold, just perfect for wearing my ancient comfortably worn sweatshirt. I'm on vacation for a week and expect to spend most of my time playing in the leaves. So expect rare blogging for the next week.

Better yet, why don't you go outside and play too. The jerks will still be here, doing their jerky things, when we all get back.
Defense Condition
is still yellow. Why do you suppose that is?

No Cash for the DNC
from me and here's why. Democrats who voted YEA on the most recent anti-abortion bill: Bayh (D-IN), Biden (D-DE), Breaux (D-LA), Byrd (D-WV), Carper (D-DE), Conrad (D-ND), Daschle (D-SD), Dorgan (D-ND), Hollings (D-SC), Johnson (D-SD), Landrieu (D-LA), Leahy (D-VT), Lincoln (D-AR), Miller (D-GA), Nelson (D-NE), Pryor (D-AR), Reid (D-NV). The only good news is that none of them represent me.

(vote via TBogg)
The Religious Right
seems to be well on the way to taking total control over my body. Today the U.S. Senate passed their most recent late term abortion ban on a horrifying 64-34 vote. Mr. Bush will, of course, sign it. And, of course, it will be challenged. Nothing new here folks. Move along.

Terri Schiavo, the brain-damaged Florida woman who was disconnected from her feeding and hydration tubes last week, became another victim of the right when the Florida legislature today passed a bill allowing Governor Jeb Bush to order the feeding tube reinserted. Here we have the precedent of the Governor overturning the family's wishes. The immediate family that is. Her husband expressing her wishes requested that the tube be removed. Her parents insisted it be reinserted. Family values.

Both cases express the core notion that my body is under assault from the religious right -- they assert and insist that the state enforce the notion that they may decide what I may do with my body. I can think of nothing more intimately invasive than that. It is much worse that being involuntarily detained or even being tortured. I could spin out possible ramifications for a while, but there is no point here. It does seem that we are only a hair's breath away from outlawing birth control, or anything else that doesn't express the wishes of the radical religious on the right.

I am very frightened.

I'm Tired
I know this should be the beginning of the serious political season. But I'm just soooo fed up with the California ridiculousness. And the Texas redistricting. And the revolving head from the 1600 Crew telling me how great the war is. And the Pentagon sending fake letters from servicefolks to local papers. And of the non-White House White House official trashing Ms. Plame and committing treason.

And of General Boykin telling folks that we are fighting the Muslim scourge then apologizing and making it worse. Oh yeah. Go read Patriotboy who has been staying in close touch with the situation.

Can't they just act right for a day or two?

Compassionate Conservatism
and stupid, too. My Local Paper has a piece today about efforts by the Bush administration to outsource food service work currently performed by mentally retarded workers. The notion of firing these folks who will then end up on public assistance so that some private sector firm can earn a few extra bucks is just swell.

" James Eastridge, 38, another former Rock Terrace student, has worked in the kitchen for 22 years. That is long enough for him to earn several promotions and enough money to buy a house in Hagerstown, where he lives with his parents.

"I started out when I was 16 years old and just kept on working; the years just flew by," he said. "I hope we get to keep the jobs. When I was in school, I was pretty wild. They got me in the job . . . and I've been doing good ever since I've been here."

*sigh*

Here and There
Some way late, but I don't do this often:

  • Brooke Biggs' Bitter Shack has a new home. And she is hawking some very cool t-shirts to support her blogging habit.

  • Digby at Hullabaloo provides us with a transcript of Rush on the hardship of little people trying to acquire prescription drugs. You don't have to imagine how sympathetic he is; you can read it yourself.

  • Lisa English's son has returned from the hospital and is doing well. And we are very glad to have her back keeping them honest and reminding us to call/email/write our Congresscritters.

  • Eric over at the DNC blog, Kicking Ass has responded to me and whoever else prompted him, encouraged him, and provided him with names (like Elayne Riggs) and has added some women bloggers to their links. It is nice to see such a positive response. Thanks Eric!

The Downhill Slide Continues
Rush Limbaugh (who even twenty years ago didn't look as good as the faked up picture of him on his web site) is checking himself into rehab On his radio show today he said "You know I have always tried to be honest with you and open about my life,'' Limbaugh said during a stunning admission aired nationwide. ``So I need to tell you today that part of what you have heard and read is correct. I am addicted to prescription pain medication.''

I guess at this point my disgust and distain is supposed to instantly turn to compassion and I am supposed to wish him the best and stop mentioning the fact that he is a hypocrite and a hate-monger who earns 32 million dollars a year lying on the radio. Well once again I guess I'm failing. He was scum. He is scum. He will be scum.

Now I'm going off to work on saying what I really mean.
Mr. Vice President
After an eternity of obscurity, hiding in undisclosed locations, and generally doing everything possible to make himself invisible, Dick Cheney emerges from the shadows to defend the administration on Iraq. And to make public remarks at campaign events. And to take some obvious hits on his Halliburton connection (too many links to even start with that -- you know it is true.

Now let us shift gears for a moment. The White House "has said three people were not sources for the leak: Mr. Rove; I. Lewis Libby, Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staf; and Elliott Abrams, director of Mideast affairs at the National Security Council." thereby drawing increased attention to those three. Well, not really. The increased attention goes to Mr. Libby and Mr. Abrams; Mr. Rove was already getting plenty of attention on this matter.

What do these two events have in common? Hrm, a cynical mind might think that both of them were designed to draw attention away from The Man Behind The Curtain, one Mr. Rove. Yes, yes, Mr. Rove had been experiencing more individualized attention than at any time in his career that I can recall. His picture was becoming seen more often than that of his marionette. And I have always gotten the impression that Mr. Rove does not like the spotlight one little bit. So what better way to divert attention away from himself than to shine it on someone already widely loathed and mistrusted?

Naaah, they would never do anything like that.

I Guess
it wouldn't be charitable, y'know, to sorta wish that Ka-lee-forn-ya, oh. secedes or falls into the ocean. It would be kind of nifty to have a beach in Nevada along with prostitution and gambling and white tigers Wayne Newton and Celene Dion. Yes indeed.

Arnold, Fin
I hope. I can't stomach the discussion so I will point you to Jeanne D'Arc at Body and Soul -- I'm not sending you to the permalink because she has three excellent pieces -- and Digby at Hullabaloo who can speak for me.

I am hoping against hope that we have heard the end of this nonsense and that, for once, good sense prevails.

Local Color
On this beautiful early autumn day an ice cream truck meandered through my neighborhood playing its enticing tune and sporting a huge "Howard Dean for President" sign.
The MacArthur Awards
have been announced
. I'm not on the list again this year. Are you?

As We Suspected
the firm that Valerie Plame worked for has been exposed as a CIA front. Which not only destroys its effectiveness, but exposes other employees to danger. Whether or not they were operatives, one must assume they were.

Yes, I keep thinking this is a little worse than a blowjob, but I'm probably biased.

Scary Picture

Go read the piece about these bad boys being worse than Nixon in Salon by somebody named John W. Dean.

I Don't Know Where to Begin
Rush resigns. SCLM did him in.

Rush is being investigated for illegal drug use.

The Plame traitor is all over the news.

The press remembers that Arnold is a groper.

Arnold admires what Hitler with so little formal education and his public speaking ability.

What on earth happened? How did the media all of a sudden lose their total toadiness?

Seriously. Did somebody put something in the water? This is the kind of stuff we typically blog about forever and they ignore while sucking up to the 1600 Crew and the others they believe are in power. Is this the beginning of something resembling actual reporting or is it just a fluke, a flast in the pan?
